PhishSniff is a Gmail add-on designed to help users detect phishing emails by scanning message content for suspicious keywords, links, and known phishing domains. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data with care and transparency.

Information We Access

PhishSniff requires specific permissions (OAuth scopes) to function effectively. Below is a detailed explanation of what we access and why:

  • View Add-on Context: Allows PhishSniff to run within the Gmail interface. No personal data is accessed.
  • Read Current Email Content: Lets PhishSniff scan the currently opened email for phishing indicators like keywords and links. This is read-only access and no data is stored or transmitted externally.
  • Read Message Metadata: Accesses metadata such as sender address and message ID to determine if an email is internal or external.
  • Modify Gmail Threads: Used to apply a custom label (e.g., "⚠️ Suspicious") to flagged messages. No email content is modified.
  • Manage Gmail Labels: Allows creation or lookup of the custom label used for marking suspicious emails.
  • Make External Requests: Used to query the Google Safe Browsing API to check if links in the email are known to be malicious.

What We Don’t Do

  • We do not store your email data.
  • We do not transmit your content to any third-party server.
  • We do not access your inbox beyond the currently open message.
  • We do not send emails or modify content.
  • We do not collect personal information or use tracking mechanisms.

Data Security

PhishSniff operates entirely within Google secure infrastructure using Apps Script. No data leaves your Gmail account, except for URL checks made via Google own Safe Browsing service.

User Control

You may revoke access to PhishSniff at any time by visiting your Google Account Permissions. You may also uninstall the add-on through the Gmail add-on panel.
